Customize existing rates: hide, rename and reorder shipping options

Your store already shows shipping options at checkout, such as the rates you set in Shopify, rates from other apps, and rates Rulify creates. Customize existing rates lets you change how those options look to customers without rebuilding them. You can:

  • Hide an option so customers don't see it.
  • Rename an option so customers see a different title.
  • Reorder an option by moving it to the top or bottom of the list.

Each change is a scenario, so it only runs when its conditions match the order. For example, you can hide Express Shipping for heavy orders, rename Standard Shipping to "Free Delivery ๐ŸŽ‰" for orders over $100, or put your cheapest option first for customers in one country.

The one rule to remember: a scenario always finds an option by its original name โ€” the name the option had before Rulify changed anything. This matters most for Reorder. Never type a name you set with a Rename scenario. See Reorder uses the original name.

Before you start

  • Turn on Delivery customization. In Rulify, open the first screen or go to Scenarios and turn on Delivery customization. Until it's on, you can't choose Customize existing rates when you create a scenario.
  • Find the original names of your options. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery and look at the shipping options in each zone. For rates Rulify creates, the original name is the rate name in that Rulify scenario. Write the names down exactly as they appear at checkout.

Create a customize scenario

  1. In Rulify, go to Scenarios and create a new scenario.
  2. Give it a name you'll recognise, such as "Hide Express for heavy orders".
  3. Under Mode, choose Customize existing rates.
  4. Under Conditions, choose when the change should happen. Leave the conditions empty to apply it to every order.
  5. Under Action, choose Hide option, Rename option, or Reorder option.
  6. In Which option, type the original name of the shipping option.
  7. Fill in the extra setting for your action, if it has one (see below).
  8. Make sure the scenario is switched on, then click Save Scenario.

Your change starts showing at checkout shortly after you save. To stop it, switch the scenario off or delete it. The original option comes back exactly as it was.

How "Which option" finds an option

Rulify compares what you type in Which option against the original name of every shipping option at checkout.

  • Capital letters don't matter. express matches Express Shipping.
  • Part of a name is enough. standard matches Standard Shipping.
  • Every option that contains your text is changed. Express matches both Express Shipping and International Express. If you only want to change one of them, type enough of the name to single it out, such as International Express.

Tip: typing the full original name is the safest choice. It avoids changing an option you didn't mean to change.

Hide option

The option disappears from checkout for any order that matches the scenario's conditions.

Example: hide "Express Shipping" when the order weighs more than 20 kg.

  • Conditions: Cart weight greater than 20 kg
  • Action: Hide option
  • Which option: Express Shipping

Be careful not to hide every option at once. If a customer has no shipping options left, they can't complete checkout.

Rename option

The option shows a new title at checkout. The price and the delivery method stay the same.

  • New title: the title customers will see, for example Free Delivery ๐ŸŽ‰.

Example: rename "Standard Shipping" to "Free Delivery ๐ŸŽ‰" when the order is over $100.

  • Conditions: Cart total greater than 100
  • Action: Rename option
  • Which option: Standard Shipping
  • New title: Free Delivery ๐ŸŽ‰

Good to know: for some options, Shopify shows the carrier or app name in front of a renamed title. Shopify adds this and it can't be removed.

Renaming only changes what customers see. Every other scenario, including your Hide and Reorder scenarios, still finds this option by its original name, Standard Shipping.

Reorder option

The option moves to the Top or the Bottom of the shipping list at checkout.

  • Move to: choose Top or Bottom.

Reorder uses the original name

In Which option, always type the option's original name: the name in your Shopify shipping settings, or the rate name in your Rulify scenario. Don't type the new title you set with a Rename scenario.

Rulify checks every scenario against your shipping options as they arrive at checkout, before any of your changes are applied. At that point, the option still has its original name. A new title from a Rename scenario only appears on the customer's screen at the end. A Reorder scenario looking for that new title won't find anything, and nothing will move.

Example: you want "Standard Shipping" to show as "Free Delivery ๐ŸŽ‰" and to sit at the top of the list.

You need two scenarios. Both of them use the original name:

Scenario Action Which option Setting
Rename standard Rename option Standard Shipping New title: Free Delivery ๐ŸŽ‰
Standard to top Reorder option Standard Shipping โœ… Move to: Top

At checkout, customers see Free Delivery ๐ŸŽ‰ at the top of the list.

What doesn't work:

Scenario Action Which option Result
Standard to top Reorder option Free Delivery โŒ Nothing moves. There's no option with that original name.

The same applies to Hide option. To hide an option you renamed, type its original name.

More tips for reordering

  • Move one option per position. If several options are moved to the top by different scenarios, or one scenario's text matches several options, you can't count on which one ends up first. Keep one option for Top and one for Bottom.
  • A hidden option stays hidden. If a scenario hides an option and another one moves it, the option doesn't show.
  • Pair Reorder with conditions. For example, move your local delivery option to the top only when the destination is inside your saved delivery zone.

Conditions you can use

Customize scenarios use the same conditions as your other scenarios:

  • Order value, total weight, or number of items.
  • The currency the order is placed in.
  • Products carrying a specific tag.
  • A particular product in the order, or one that must not be present.
  • The destination country.
  • The destination postcode, or a delivery zone you have saved.

Customer tag isn't available for customize scenarios. To target specific customers, use it in a Create new rate scenario instead.

Troubleshooting

My option didn't change at checkout.

  • Check that the scenario is switched on and that Delivery customization is turned on.
  • Check that Which option uses the original name of the option, not a title you set with Rename. This is the most common reason a Reorder or Hide doesn't work.
  • Compare your text with the name in Settings > Shipping and delivery. Look for typos or extra words.
  • Check that the order you're testing matches the scenario's conditions. For example, the cart total is really over your limit and the address is in the right country.

The wrong option changed, or more than one did.

What you typed is part of more than one option's name. Type more of the original name, or the full name, so it matches only the option you want.

My renamed title has extra text in front of it.

Shopify adds the carrier or app name to some renamed options. This can't be turned off.
