Set up the Carrier Service and fix missing rates at checkout

Rulify shows its rates at checkout through a Shopify Carrier Service named Rulify. For your rates to appear, four things need to be in place:

  1. Your Shopify store is allowed to show rates from apps.
  2. The Rulify Carrier Service is activated.
  3. Rulify is added to your shipping zones.
  4. At least one scenario is switched on and matches the order.

Go through the steps below in order.

Step 1: Turn on rates from apps in your Shopify store

Shopify calls this feature third-party carrier-calculated shipping. If it isn't turned on for your store, Rulify still runs your rules, but Shopify won't show the rates at checkout. Find your plan below.

Advanced or Plus

It's already turned on. Go to Step 2.

Grow (previously called the Shopify plan)

It isn't turned on by default, and only Shopify Support can turn it on for you. You have two options:

  • Pay yearly, no extra cost. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Plan and switch to yearly billing. Then contact Shopify Support and ask them to turn on third-party carrier-calculated shipping.
  • Keep paying monthly. Contact Shopify Support and ask them to add third-party carrier-calculated shipping to your plan. Shopify charges an extra monthly fee for this, and Support will tell you the price.

Basic or Starter

This feature isn't available on these plans. Upgrade to Grow and follow the steps above, or upgrade to Advanced.

How to contact Shopify Support

  1. Go to help.shopify.com/en/questions and log in with the account you use for your store.
  2. Start a chat or send an email to Shopify Support. You can use this message:

Hi, please turn on third-party carrier-calculated shipping for my store your-store.myshopify.com. I use a shipping app (Rulify) to show rates at checkout. I have switched to yearly billing.

If you want to keep monthly billing, replace the last sentence with: "I would like to add it for the monthly fee."

  1. When Support confirms it's turned on, continue to Step 2.

Step 2: Activate the Rulify Carrier Service

Rulify activates its Carrier Service automatically when you turn on Custom shipping rates. To check it:

  1. Open Rulify and go to Settings.
  2. Look at the Carrier Service card.
    • If it says Connected, move on to Step 3.
    • If it says Not registered, click Register Carrier Service.
  3. If you see an error, the message comes from Shopify. Most of the time it means Step 1 isn't done yet. Fix what the message says, then click the button again.

Step 3: Add Rulify to your shipping zones

Activating the Carrier Service makes Rulify available in Shopify. Next, you choose which shipping zones use its rates.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery. You can also click Open Shipping settings on the Carrier Service card in Rulify.
  2. Open your shipping profile. For most stores this is General shipping rates.
  3. In the shipping zone you want Rulify to handle, click Add shipping option.
  4. Under Rate type, choose Carrier or app calculated.
  5. Click Choose carrier and apps, then select Rulify in the Carrier or app list.
  6. Keep all of Rulify's services selected and click Done.
  7. Click Save.

Do this for every zone and every shipping profile where you want Rulify's rates to show.

Any flat rates you already have in the same zone will keep showing next to Rulify's rates. If you only want customers to see Rulify's rates in that zone, delete the flat rates there.

Step 4: Check your scenarios

  • In Rulify, open Scenarios and make sure at least one scenario is switched on.
  • Make sure its conditions match the order you're testing. Test Mode lets you run the same order through your scenarios and shows which rates it would get.

When to re-register the Carrier Service

Re-register if:

  • Rulify says Connected, but none of your rates show at checkout.
  • Rulify is missing from the Carrier or app list in Step 3.
  • You reinstalled Rulify.
  • Someone changed or removed shipping settings in your Shopify admin.

To re-register:

  1. In Rulify, go to Settings.
  2. On the Carrier Service card, click Re-register Carrier Service.
  3. Wait for the confirmation message. It takes a few seconds.

Re-registering gives Rulify a fresh connection to your checkout. Your scenarios, zones and settings stay the same, and you can do it as many times as you need.

Important: after re-registering, go through Step 3 again and check that Rulify is still added to each of your shipping zones.

Still not seeing your rates?

  • The error says the Carrier Service "already exists" and was "created by a different app installation". This means another copy of Rulify is installed on your store. Uninstall the other copy in Settings > Apps in your Shopify admin, then click Register Carrier Service again.
  • Something else. Email us at hello@lisive.com with your store address (for example your-store.myshopify.com) and a screenshot of the Carrier Service card in Rulify. We'll help you sort it out.
